Art was never meant to stay on a wall

This story begins in a classroom — back when I was pursuing my Fine Arts course. One day, sitting in class, I found myself wondering why art always stays confined — to a canvas, to gallery walls, to the inside of a room. We've all seen it: a painting is made, it hangs on a wall, and that's where it stays. Why can't the person who loves it carry it with them? Why can't art move, travel, live alongside people?

That's where the idea came from — why not bring painting onto a bag? It wasn't just a new product idea; it was a new question: what if a bag wasn't just something to hold your things, but something that told a story too?

When I first shared this idea with fellow artisans working in traditions like Madhubani and Warli — some of whom had spent years perfecting their craft — I saw a different kind of spark in their eyes. Because for them too, this was a new canvas. Art that had lived only on walls, sarees, or paper now had the chance to travel with someone, every single day.

Rootshands is the result of that thinking. Every bag here carries a story — of a village, of a tradition, of an artisan's hands at work. When you carry a Rootshands bag, you're not just carrying a design — you're keeping a tradition alive, and helping a local artist's work reach the world.

I started this journey alongside fellow artists, with a small investment and no major backing. Our first exhibition was in Lucknow, and the response we got was more than I expected. A lot of people loved our work — one customer even bought four bags at once. That day, I realised this idea wasn't just good — it was genuinely supportive for artists too. That with the right platform, their craft could bring them both a livelihood and recognition.

Today, Rootshands is a small beginning, but the dream is big — to build a world where bags aren't just fashion, but a living, moving piece of India's folk art. Where every bag has an artisan standing behind it, and every artisan's story moves forward.

This journey has just begun. Your support is what will carry it forward.

None of this would have been possible without my three artists — Shivangi Yadav, Himanshu Gupta, and Himanshu Pal — who have stood by Rootshands since day one, turning every idea into a handpainted reality.
